Hosting a weekly podcast – Domain Masters reaches 250 episode milestone

Since December of 2004, the Domain Masters radio/podcast show has broadcast weekly episodes of domain industry news, pulse reports on new trends and domain success stories.  The show completed its 250th episode last week with an interview of Antony Van Couvering of Minds and Machines, about the new gTLD process.  On September 14th at 5pm ET, Domain Masters will air a Flashback show with interviews of former host and audio clips and bloopers from shows over the years. Listen live at Webmasterradio.fm or check later for archives of the show on iTunes or other popular podcast locations.

So what is Domain Masters?

Founded by Monte Cahn, in collaboration with the good folks over at Webmasterradio.fm, the radio show broadcast its first show on December 15, 2004 with Monte Cahn as host and guest were Jay Berkowitz and Dr. John Berryhill.  The format of the show at the time was essential one hour of programing, less a little time for WebmasterRadio.fm to insert some commercials.   Listeners could listen live or to archives of the show without having to download software.   The show was syndicated through iTunes, and several other podcast services.

Even though Monte was at the time the CEO and co-founder of Moniker, he did not make the show about Moniker.  Granted, he inserted his shares of indirect plugs about what Moniker, it did not take away from the interviews and discussions about the larger picture of the domain industry.  Monte set the tone for the show, that subsequent host were very comfortable with.

Over the past few weeks I have listened to parts from all of the past shows of Domain Masters.  I estimated there was over 160+ hours of amazing audio content all about the domain industry.  The show has tapped the minds of the industries brightest and most successful leaders and then shared it with you week after week.  This content is available for free download at http://www2.webmasterradio.fm/domain-masters/, as well as through iTunes.   The wonderful thing about these podcast is they are convenient to download to your computer or MP3 player, so you can listen to the episodes when traveling.

GUEST INTERVIEWS:

Previous show guest have included SEO gurus Danny Sullivan, Bruce Clay, and John Andrews.  Two people that even these calibers of guest were sure to listen to were former guest Matt Cutts of Google, and Tim Mayer of Yahoo.

Most frequent quest have been Ron Jackson with 11 guest appearances, and Rick Schwartz at 9.   Most of the domain Registries has been interviewed on the show.  For many domainers, this is the only direct communication they have ever received from a Registry.  Likewise Domain Masters provides ongoing updates to listeners about ICANN activity.  Hosts are either on location at ICANN or speaking directly to attendees.

SHOW TOPICS

Frequent themes for the shows include:

  • domains in SEO
  • domain sales
  • affiliate marketing using domains
  • new TLDs
  • domainer success stories
  • new products and services to benefit domainers
  • regulatory changes / ICANN update
  • IDNs
  • Tradeshows of interest (there are dozens of tradeshows discussed within the context of the programs)

WEBMASTER RADIO COMMERCIALS HAVE UNEXPECTED BENEFIT

Yes, DomainMasters is carried by an online commercial radio station by our choice.  Speaking of commercials, they do in fact insert commercials into the body of the show.  There have been moments where this has bothered me.  On the other hand I am bothered by commercial programming on TV and broadcast radio too. I do however understand that it is the commercials that pay for the programing cost of the station.  I also feel that the commercials run on the station are fun to listen to, as the Webmasterradio.fm team is quite creative.  The commercials are from reputable technology companies that most domainers would want to know about.  These commercials help listeners to find quality SEO experts, developers, affiliate managers, monetization programs, and consultants.  Yes commercials suck – but targeted commercials tend to resonate louder when they reach the intended ear.  Lastly listening to shows from seven years ago, I was interested to see how many of the advertisers from then were still around today.  This indicates to me that the companies that associate with the radio station are in business for the long haul.  That too is important to know.

CONCLUSION

I remember listening to the very first episode recorded by Monte, on the inaugural program.  I remember the excitement for him and the interest I had in the shows format.  I was delighted to fill in for Monte the first time he asked me to guest host, and every time he asked thereafter,  When Monte stepped away from the show because of his personal schedule, I was only too willing to step up to the challenge of hosting the show. While I enjoy writing, the audio format of Domain Masters is often a better tool for communicating to business people on the go. Podcast can be listened to while driving, flying, or any other situation where the listener can play the show while engaged in other task.  Reading requires them to stop, read, and think.  Audio shows do not encumber the listener with the same level of engagement, and in these busy times – that is a plus.

Enjoy listening to Domain Masters.  Let me know if there is something in particular that you want to listen to.

Cheers!

Victor

There are resellers of domain names, but you will notice that their website does not say ICANN acccredited, and their terms and conditionsreflect the policies of the registrar they are reselling for.
